Cocksure Courteeners' rise continues

AS magical moments go, hearing that you've just sold out your biggest hometown show yet while drinking in the picturesque vista provided on the banks of Loch Ness is not a bad one to tuck away for the grandkids. On route to yet another sold out date, this time in far-reaching Aberdeen, Manchester's brightest new hope in ages are revelling in the attention currently being showered upon them. But as the cocksure and ever quotable frontman Liam Fray is quick to point out, they believe their forthcoming debut LP St Jude will cement their position further. “It's a work of art, I'm so proud of us. There's been a lot of pressure with people hyping us, but I'm openly, openly confident that people will see - with those 12 tracks – that there is worth to what we are doing." Relatively inexperienced in the machinations of the studio and recording process, Fray does however concede, he has been surprised about how well the sessions went.

Pakistani stars desert Lollywood for Bollywood

There's a rather unexpected fallout of the India-Pakistan peace process: film stars are deserting Lollywood for better pastures in Bollywood.

The lack of good quality productions and the slump in local cinema have led Pakistani movie stars to India, "where they are tripping over each other" to sign up for Bollywood ventures, according to the Daily Times.

"These actors and actresses like to highlight that their performances across the border give a boost to India-Pakistan relations," the newspaper said on Saturday.

"However, while the top talent enjoys the more professional, and lucrative, experience of working in India, less glamorous film industry professionals are running out of work."

Ironically, Indian movies are still banned here.

iTALC promotes learning on a classroom network
iTALC, or Intelligent Teaching and Learning with Computers, is a didactical tool designed to assist teachers. Despite its name, the tool itself isn't a learning environment. It's meant to let teachers control their students' computers in a computer-driven classroom setting. Thanks to its powerful remote desktop control features, simple setup, and lack of cost, it's a potential remote assistance tool for any type of network.

Strike One Against Microsoft

In our last blog posted on February 21, I proposed three test pitches for Microsoft to help judge the meaningfulness of its latest efforts to turn over a new leaf on interoperability.

Lindsay Lohan, Eddie Murphy share worst film awards

Despite bad reviews, moviegoers had turned out for the film, which took in $158 million at worldwide box offices based mostly on Murphy's popularity.

Lohan won two worst actress awards for playing twins in "I Know Who Killed Me," a film that was named worst of the year.

She also won worst screen couple for a scene in which she appears opposite herself in the tale about psychically linked siblings stalked by a serial killer.

"I Know Who Killed Me," a major box office flop with a $9 million take worldwide, won eight of nine Raspberries for which it was nominated, breaking a record of seven wins previously held by "Showgirls" and "Battlefield Earth."

Lohan was in and out of rehabilitation programs last year and acknowledged last month that she had fallen off the wagon at a New Year's Eve party.

CleanFlicks sues over porn backlash

That business is now defunct, but police said the purportedly clean video business was being used as a front for the creation and distribution of pornography.

CleanFlicks got into legal trouble with Hollywood for copyright violations and lost its case in federal court in 2006. But its effort to make a comeback as an online retailer -- now of unedited movies -- is being hampered by the past association with Thompson, according to CleanFlicks co-founder and partner Ray Lines.

On Friday, Lines and his attorney announced a $1.1 million trademark infringement lawsuit against Thompson, who they say made use of the CleanFlicks name to do business. Thompson has tainted the company in the eyes of customers, the lawsuit alleges.

Lines said that all ties with Thompson were severed in 2003 when the company dissolved its dealerships nationwide in a move to become an online DVD rental retailer.

LaCie Rugged All-Terrain Hard Drive 100GB

Looking more like a piece of life-safety equipment than a storage device, the device's small metal case is fitted with a bright orange rubber gasket that protects the sides and edges from scuffs and snags, allowing you to casually throw it into your travel bag with nary a worry.

Having Rugged and All-Terrain as part of the product name implies that the drive can withstand a certain amount of abuse. Although we resisted performing a drop-kick test, the rugged moniker might lull some users into thinking that the drive's rubber bumper offers more protection than just shock resistance.

The drive comes pre-formatted for the Mac and ready to use. Just connect the drive to your Mac using either the USB 2.0, FireWire 400, or FireWire 800 ports. For laptops with limited power supplies, an additional cable is included for drawing bus power from an available USB port on the computer.
