Tom Savini, Legendary Special Effects Make-Up Artist, Actor and ...

MONESSEN, Pa., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Douglas Education Center (DEC), a creative career school located just 30 minutes south of Pittsburgh, is already home to Tom Savini's monstrously successful Special Make-Up Effects Program, which began in 2000 and has graduated hundreds of students from all over the country. DEC offers many other programs besides make-up effects, including graphic design, illustration, cosmetology, and starting in February, Tom Savini's Digital Film Production Program. "Our film students are going to have the opportunity to collaborate with all of these other programs on their productions," said Savini. "They will be surrounded by talented individuals, just like in a professional studio, from the very first day they step on campus."

Each student entering the 16-month program receives a video camera and a laptop computer fully equipped with software for all their filmmaking needs.

Baptist College Opens Door to Non-Baptist Christian Groups

The Baylor Board of Regents revised the university wide organizational religion policy on Friday, welcoming Christian groups in addition to Baptist ones to meet and be chartered at Baylor, according to the school news publication, The Lariat.

In an editorial on Tuesday, The Lariat applauded the "overdue" revision, noting that Methodists, Catholics and Presbyterians among other groups have been treated like "Christian step-children" for too long.

The revision will make the university "more welcoming" of other Christian organizations, Baylor University president John M. Lilley said, as reported by the student publication.

Baylor students had passed a bill early last year in an effort to grant non-Baptist Christian groups the same privileges as Baptist organizations on campus.

Dumpster Divers Go Mainstream In Thrifty Germany

Sven Brylla has been furnishing his apartments for years with discarded furniture, wood and fittings snagged off the streets of Berlin.

In his kitchen stands a fridge so old that it predates electricity. Meltwater from a metal icebox once ran between the panels of the wooden cabinet, cooling its contents. Now it's his cupboard.

His kitchen table is a gnarled old workbench. He found his favorite armchair at a garbage dump. His revolving inventory of street junk has included 20 vintage radios and half a dozen prewar bicycles made in the USSR.

In many other countries, dumpster divers like Mr. Brylla would be written off as eccentrics. In Germany, he's just a normal 36-year-old graphic printer brought up to look down on wasting money on new things when sturdy old stand-bys are there for the taking.

Dead Zones Off Oregon and Washington Likely Tied to Global Warming ...

It was a good amount of crabs," Pazar said. "But they were dead, or dying or very, very weak. Those that we managed to keep alive didn't survive for long."

The fishermen called Oregon State, which dispatched a boat of researchers to investigate.

"It was a big mystery," Lubchenco said. "We didn't know what was killing them."

Fishermen found other oddities. As they pulled up their crab traps, they found baby octopuses, about the size of silver dollars, inching their way up the lines toward the buoys floating on the surface.

"I'd tell my crewmen, be careful with these cute little things," said Dennis Krulich, a longtime fishermen in Newport. "Peel them off the rope, and we'll put them back."

Only later did he realize that these babies were coming up from oxygen-depleted waters that hover near the seafloor, climbing to save their lives.

That's the ballgame: Toshiba bows out of HD DVD

Many for example know the playstation name as a gaming console and one that has proven its worth over time. The idea of having it as a blu-ray player isn't that attractive to someone who has zero interesting in gaming. I doubt the thought would have even crossed their mind. What would a salesman say if someone said they were looking for a blu-ray player? Should they recommend a playstation? Surly not. They would offer the customer several solutions. I know you said yourself you are not a ps3 fanboy and I accept that because of the effort and sense you put into your post instead of bashing and throwing insults around. But that said there are those here that just preach PS3 PS3 PS3 and just cant understand there is more to blu-ray than their precious investment.
