Xacti HD1a HD camcorder adds wide display, more

Sanyo on Thursday introduced the Xacti HD1a, a compact digital media camera that records both still pictures and digital video. It does it all onto an SD flash memory card. The Xacti HD1a is coming in September for $699.99.

The Xacti HD1a records video in 720p and grabs 5.1 megapixel still images. Because it uses SD cards instead of bulky tapes or optical media, it's much more compact than other camcorders. It uses a 10x optical zoom lens and 2.2-inch LCD display.

New features in the HD1a include a 16:9 widescreen still picture mode, in-camera video editing, a 30 frames-per-second 320 x 240 MPEG-4 pixel video recording mode called “Web-SHQ," optimized for the video iPod.

The 16:9 still image mode grabs 3.8 megapixel images in the same wide-screen format as the Xacti HD1's digital videos.

Coroner says artist Stephen Garrett "Static" died from complications ...

I will cherish your memory. To your wife and children God broke the mode when he was made. I pray that your memories comfort you in your time of need. This was a great man and he will forever be greatly missed..........CHEERS 2 U my homie 4eva NAENAY

I would like to send my prayers and sympathy out to Steve's family and all the members of the group Playa. I did not know Steve personally. But feel like I know him now. When Mark Gunn played all the songs that he has produced on the radio on Tuesday I feel like I know him now. When I heard that he was a member of the group Playa. I felt even closer to him. The music that he has produced and written, I think that someone should make a CD of some of the great music that he made while he was here on earth. We all don't know when or how we will leave this old world.

R. Queisser: Does "Faulty Planning" by Pentagon Surprise Anyone ...

Jane Stillwater: Does prayer really work? "No." (2 comments) At the rate I've been wearing my knees out, if prayer really worked, we'd have PEACE in the world right now. But maybe peace will come through the back door -- because America simply can't afford "war" any more. And maybe my appeal to the Pentagon to reinstate my embed will come through. And maybe Desperate Housewives will get back on the air and...maybe in 2008 we won't just elect "More of the Same". Not a prayer.

Film imagines bond linking heiress, butler

Bernard and Doris is an unusual romance about a modern pauper and princess.

The HBO movie, starring Ralph Fiennes and Susan Sarandon, will premiere tonight.

The premium service describes the story as an "imagined relationship" between two real-life characters: Irish butler Bernard Lafferty and billionaire tobacco heiress Doris Duke, who hired him in 1987.

In the enchanting, bittersweet dual portrait, the relationship is intimate yet conflicted, racked by co-dependency. Doris is a demanding, fast-living grande dame. Bernard is a tormented gay man from humble origins to whom Doris becomes an obsession.

Director Bob Balaban says he liked the story by screenwriter Hugh Costello, "and when Susan became interested and Ralph jumped aboard, it didn't occur to me not to do it."

The film -- shot in 20 days at a century-old estate with 300 acres of gardens and a 23-room mansion on New York's Long Island -- never hints at penny-pinching, although Balaban says it was made on a bare-bones $500,000 budget.
